Warehouse Painting Requirements

Warehouse work is dominated by two things: scale and height. Large uninterrupted areas make spray application the efficient method, and roof structures, racking bays and high-level steelwork mean most of the job happens well off the ground under a fall protection plan.

For facilities near the coast, corrosion is the governing risk. Chloride-laden air attacks structural steel, roof sheeting and connections, and the areas that fail first are usually the least visible - purlins, connections, and the underside of sheeting where condensation collects.

Light is the other consideration that gets undervalued. Warehouse interiors are frequently dark, and a light, reflective coating on walls and soffits can measurably improve working visibility and reduce lighting load. It is one of the few coating decisions with an operational payback beyond protection.

Floor Coatings for Warehouses

  • Moisture testing before specification - a slab with rising moisture will delaminate any system laid over it
  • Mechanical preparation by grinding or shot blasting, never acid etching on a floor expected to take forklift traffic
  • Epoxy or polyurethane build systems selected for the actual load, not a domestic-grade floor paint
  • Anti-slip aggregate at loading bays, ramps and any area that gets wet
  • Repair of cracks, joints and spalled areas before coating, with exposed reinforcing treated
  • Full cure respected before vehicle traffic - the interval for forklifts is much longer than for foot traffic
  • Chemical-resistant systems where batteries are charged or fluids are handled

Safety Line Marking and Signage

  • Pedestrian walkways clearly demarcated and separated from vehicle routes
  • Racking bay numbering and aisle identification for stock control as well as safety
  • Loading bay edges, ramps and level changes highlighted
  • Fire equipment, exit routes and assembly points marked and kept clear
  • Hazard zones, charging areas and restricted access clearly identified
  • Line marking incorporated into the floor system rather than applied over it, so it wears at the same rate
  • Refreshed on the same cycle as the floor coating, since faded demarcation is a compliance issue as well as a safety one
