Why Professional Wallpaper Removal Is Absolutely Worth It

Wallpaper removal looks like a job anyone can do until the plaster starts coming off with it. What determines the outcome is almost entirely what is underneath, and you cannot know that until you start.

In Green Point a great deal of the wallpaper we take off is in older buildings where it was hung directly onto lime plaster, sometimes with no size or sealer coat at all. Steaming that off aggressively can pull the plaster face away with the paper. The older the building, the more careful the process has to be.

There is a second discovery that comes up regularly here: wallpaper hiding damp. Paper is often hung to cover a wall that was already failing, and the moisture continues underneath it. Removing it reveals the actual problem, which is a good thing - but it means the job is rarely just removal and repaint.

Signs It Is Time to Remove That Old Wallpaper

  • Lifting or curling at seams, corners and around switches
  • Bubbling or blistering, which usually means moisture behind the paper
  • Discolouration, yellowing or a dated pattern you have stopped seeing
  • Musty smell, a strong indicator of damp trapped behind the covering
  • Black spotting visible at the edges - mould growing behind the paper
  • Previous attempts at painting over wallpaper, which almost always telegraphs the seams
  • Multiple layers built up over decades, common in older Green Point flats

How We Remove Your Wallpaper and Prepare Walls for Painting

  • Test a small area first to establish how many layers there are and how well the plaster underneath is bonded
  • Protect floors and fittings thoroughly - removal is wet, messy work
  • Score, soak or steam as appropriate to the paper type, using the gentlest method that works rather than the fastest
  • Extra care on lime-plastered walls in older buildings, where aggressive steaming can take the plaster face with the paper
  • Remove all adhesive residue completely. Leftover paste causes new paint to bubble and flash, and it is invisible when dry
  • Assess the exposed wall properly, including sounding for hollow plaster
  • Repair damage, fill and sand to a flat surface - see plaster repairs where the damage is extensive
  • Seal the wall before painting, since bare plaster and residual adhesive both affect how a topcoat lays down

Wallpaper Removal Tips to Avoid Damaging Your Walls

  • Test in an inconspicuous corner before committing to a method
  • Go gently on older buildings. Lime plaster and heavy steam are a poor combination
  • Remove every trace of adhesive. This is the step most DIY removals skip and it is why the repaint bubbles
  • Do not paint over wallpaper as a shortcut. The seams show, and the moisture in the paint can lift the paper
  • If damp appears once the paper is off, deal with it before painting. The paper was hiding it, not fixing it
  • Allow washed walls to dry fully. Painting a damp wall guarantees adhesion failure
  • Budget for repair. On an older Green Point wall, removal almost always uncovers work that needs doing

What Happens After the Wallpaper Comes Off

The wall underneath is rarely ready to paint. Expect to find some combination of adhesive residue, patchy old paint, gouges from previous removals and, on older stock, areas of plaster that have debonded.

The sequence from there is straightforward but it cannot be compressed: full adhesive removal, sounding the wall for hollow areas, repair and fill, sand flat, seal, then paint. Skipping the sealer is a common error - bare plaster and old adhesive absorb unevenly, and the topcoat dries patchy as a result.

Where damp turns up behind the paper, that has to be resolved first and the wall allowed to dry before anything is coated. It is frustrating on a programme, but painting a wet wall simply means doing the whole job again. See damp proofing for how we approach it.

Wallpaper Removal Questions

Professional wallpaper removal service in Green Point - expert painters at work
Can you just paint over my existing wallpaper instead?
We strongly advise against it. Painted wallpaper bubbles and lifts at edges, seams show through clearly, and it never looks right. Removing it properly is always the better and longer-lasting solution.
Will removing wallpaper damage my walls badly?
Done correctly with the right tools and products, damage is minimal. Any damage that does occur we repair as part of the job. We are careful and thorough in every step.
How long does the whole wallpaper removal and painting process take?
A single room takes half to a full day for removal plus drying time, then repair and priming. Painting follows after that. We give you a clear timeline upfront.
