What Happens After the Wallpaper Comes Off

The wall underneath is rarely ready to paint. Expect to find some combination of adhesive residue, patchy old paint, gouges from previous removals and, on older stock, areas of plaster that have debonded.

The sequence from there is straightforward but it cannot be compressed: full adhesive removal, sounding the wall for hollow areas, repair and fill, sand flat, seal, then paint. Skipping the sealer is a common error - bare plaster and old adhesive absorb unevenly, and the topcoat dries patchy as a result.
